Human Trafficking Awareness Month (January 2017)

January 23rd, 2017 / Posted by / Category: Station Blog

I recently had the opportunity to interview Jewellan D. Morrison Founder/Executive Director of Un-shackled By Love Ministries. Joining us is a young woman who is a current resident of Un-shackled By Love Ministries, and a former victim of human trafficking. She shares how she went from an upper-middle-class family to becoming a victim of human trafficking, and ultimately how she was rescued.

Un-shackled By Love Ministries is an organization that helps rescue women from human trafficking. I was very surprised to learn how many women are falling victim to human trafficking under our noses right here in Central Kentucky.

Jewellan shared some staggering statistics with me:

332 victims of human trafficking have been identified in Kentucky. Of these 332 victims, 197 were trafficked as children. The youngest reported victim was 2 months old.

The most frequently occurring ages of trafficking victims in Kentucky are 15 and 17 year olds.

432+ victims (some from other states or trafficked in other countries) have received services (housing, advocacy, medical care, interpretation services, food, therapy services, etc) through Kentucky governmental and non-profit agencies.

More than 23,000 individuals in Kentucky have been educated about human trafficking since 2008.
